Waterbuck, Common

The Waterbuck is one of the largest African antelopes, and as its name implies, its habitat is never far from water. The Waterbuck is normally seen in small flocks of about 12 animals. This rather large antelope is mostly a grazer, and is often spotted in open grassland or floodplains.

It is only the bulls that are bearing horns. The large white ring on the rump characterizes both sexes. Waterbucks are usually not threatened by predators in the same way as other antelopes, due to their smelly meat. Sweat glands located throughout the body, with concentrated malodorous secretions, make the meat inedible.

Waterbuck is a great and shot-resistant antelope, and it is therefore recommended to use minimum a calibre .270. Bigger and stronger riffle calibres are also used for shots at this strong wild species.

Side By Side Safaris has a large adjacent hunting concession where there is a strong population of Common Waterbuck, with a trophy quality in the absolute top class.
