Wildebeest, Black

Black Wildebeest is a remarkable animal with unusual horns, and forward-pointing hairs on the nose.

At first glance, hunting for Black Wildebeest may seem ‘fairly easy’ as the open plains, where it lives, make it relatively easy to find. However, the hunt will be extremely difficult, as Black Wildebeest have excellent senses and its herd-instinct makes the hunt challenging. It lives in flocks, which usually counts 10-60 individuals. The average weight for a fully-grown male will typically be from 150 to 180 kg. Black Wildebeest is primarily grass eating, and will rarely eat leaves from trees or shrubs.

Black Wildebeest has been almost totally eradicated throughout Africa, as it was perceived as a pest. There is currently a large population again in South Africa, as it has done well in both residential areas and nature reserves.

Side By Side Safaris has some great hunting areas close to our hunting lodge, where there is a large population of Black Wildebeest. The Trophy quality is top notch for this carefully selected hunting area.

For shooting a Black Wildebeest in open ground, is recommended a calibre .270. A 7mm Magnum or .300 Magnum is even better choice. Black Wildebeest are very tough, why use of larger calibres with quality projectiles will be recommended. An even bigger rifle calibre as 9.3 mm or .375 will be an excellent choice for Black Wildebeest.
