Ibex, Nubian

The Nubian Ibex belong to the goat family and live in mountainous areas in Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia and Sudan. There is also a stock in the mountainous areas in the Eastern Cape province in South Africa, not far from Side By Side Safaris’ exclusive safari lodge.

Nubian Ibex is light golden-brown in colour, with a white belly. It has long thin horns that extend up and then back and down. The horns of an Ibex-ram can grow up to a meter in length, while females’ are no longer than 30 cm.

Nubian Ibex live entirely in mountainous terrain where they mainly eat grass and leaves and are preyed upon by leopards, eagles and vultures. Nubian Ibex live in flocks and are only active during the day and rest during the night.

Flat-shooting rifle calibres are recommended in the hunt for the Nubian Ibex as long shots often occur in the open mountainous terrain. The choice of rifle calibre for this wild species should be a .270. This is not an especially large animal; hence big and powerful rifle calibres are not required for this hunt.
