The South African Springhare is South Africa's version of a small kangaroo. The Springhare belongs to the family of rodents.

They have a body weight of 3-4 kg, a body length of 36-43 cm and a tail length of 40-48 cm.

Springhares look like small kangaroos; they sit on their hind legs, which are very long and used as jumping legs. The forelegs are short, only 1/4 of the length of the hind legs. The tail is strong and is used to help the animals balance in the jumps. They are prey for a variety of predators from jackals to lions, and when they are pursued, they can jump 3-4 meters.

Springhares are only nocturnal and spend the day in underground caves, which protects against the warm climate and most predators.

Springhares are particularly numerous on the grassy floodplains - here they can easily find food and the soil is perfect for their caves.

Previously the Springhares were considered to be a part of the squirrel group, but they are now given independent status as their own unique wild species.

Hunting Springhare

It is advisable to shoot this wild species with a shotgun or .22 Magnum.

Side By Side Safaris exclusive hunting lodge is located in the middle of a hunting area of Spring Hare and they can be hunted directly from the lodge.
