The Sable antelope have got its name from its black colour. In the local South African language (Afrikaans) its name is (Swartwitpens), which means black. It is only the males that have the beautiful black colour. The females and young animals are not black, but they have a dark reddish/brown colour.

In stature this antelope is very similar to the Roan Antelope. Both males and females bear horns. The ones of females are slimmer and shorter than the ones of males. Apart from the horns from a Kudu-bull, the horns from a large Sable-bull are the longest from any South African antelope.

Sable antelope are often found in large flocks of up to 30 animals, but even larger flocks are not uncommon.

Dominant bulls defend females from the attention of other interested bulls.
Sable Antelope is primarily a grazer, and prefer open woodlands with clearings with fresh grass.
