Zebra, Cape Mountain

The hunt for Cape Mountain Zebra can offer many challenges in the hilly terrain in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa.

Cape Mountain Zebra can be found in the southern reaches of the Cape Province in South Africa, while Hartmann’s Zebra was initially concentrated in the western parts of Namibia. Both the Cape Mountain Zebra, Hartmann’s Zebra and Burchell's Zebra, can be found in abundance on some of Side By Side Safaris nearby hunting concessions.

Cape Mountain Zebra and Hartmann’s Zebra is quite similar; however, the Cape Mountain Zebra is a bit smaller than its relative, the Hartmann’s Zebra. Hartmann’s Zebra prefer areas of sand and desert, whereas the Cape Mountain Zebra prefer mountainous areas.

The big difference between Cape Mountain Zebra and Burchell's Zebra is the lack of striations on Cape Mountain Zebra. In addition, the Cape Mountain Zebra have a characteristic white belly, while the stripes are going all the way around the body of a Burchell's Zebra.

All zebra species are grass-eaters and are highly dependent on daily access to water.
Trophy wise, an old female zebra pose at least as great a trophy, as an old zebra stallion. Often the skin from a zebra female is the best looking, as an old zebra stallion often can be very scarred after fighting with other males.

In the hunt for Cape Mountain Zebra, a calibre .270 is a minimum requirement as this is a strong wild species exceeding 300 kg. Larger and heavier calibre choice will also be suitable for this wild species. The well-known calibre .375 H&H will be a very good choice, and is clearly recommended for this wild species.
