Fallow Deer

The Fallow deer is not an original South African wild species. It was imported from Europe in the early colonization of South Africa.

Fallow deer is primarily a grazer, and is very adaptable to most habitats. Especially in the Eastern Cape in South Africa, there is a large population of this deer.

Only the males have antlers. Deer sheds its antlers annually in early spring. It comes into rutting season during March and April.

Regarding the choice of rifle calibre, then anything from a .270 to .30-06, is an excellent choice for this purpose.

Side By Side Safaris has a good hunting ground for just Fallow deer. The horns of a South African fallow deer, is generally less in trophy terms, compared to European deer. The hunting area is in the immediate vicinity of our exclusive hunting lodge, making it extremely comfortable for our safari clients.
