Mouflon

The Muflon belong to the sheep-family and originates from the mountainous regions of Corsica and Sardinia. Today there is a stock in the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa, where Side By Side Safaris has the hunting rights.

A Muflon-ram has a black/brown fur and on the centre of the back is a colour marking of a white ‘saddle’. The curved horns from a fully-grown ram can be up to approx. 80 cm. long.

The Mouflon live mainly in mountainous terrain where they eat grass and leaves and are preyed upon by leopards and eagles. Muflons live in groups and are primarily active during the day, and rest during the night.

A flat-shooting rifle calibre is recommended as long shots often occur in the open mountainous terrain. The choice of rifle-calibre for this wild species should be a .270, which will be effective for this purpose. It is not an especially large animal, hence big and powerful rifle calibres are not required for this hunt.
