Cape Eland
– Africa’s largest antelope
The Cape eland (Taurotragus oryx) is the largest antelope in Africa and one of the most impressive plains game species to hunt. Its massive body, heavy neck and calm appearance can be misleading. In reality, the eland is extremely tough, highly mobile and demands respect, correct shot placement and appropriate calibre.
The Cape eland is closely related to Livingstone’s eland and giant eland, but it is the most commonly hunted eland species in southern Africa. For many hunters, it represents a true highlight of an African safari.
Species description and behaviour
Cape eland are easily recognised by their enormous size, long legs, slight dewlap and spiral horns. Mature bulls develop thick, well-defined horn spirals and a heavier, more muscular appearance. Coat colour varies from light tan to greyish brown and often darkens with age.
Despite their size, eland are surprisingly agile and can move quickly over long distances. They are often found in small herds, although older bulls are frequently solitary. Their sense of smell and awareness of wind make them more alert than their calm behaviour suggests.
Habitat in the Eastern Cape
At Side by Side Safaris, Cape eland inhabit a mix of open grasslands, rolling hills, valleys and bush areas in the Eastern Cape. They cover large areas and often utilise broken terrain, making the hunt both physically and mentally engaging.
Hunting Cape Eland with Side by Side Safaris
Cape eland are hunted using spot-and-stalk methods. Hunts are rarely quick and often involve long stalks and careful planning. Shot opportunities must not be rushed.
Most shots are taken between 100 and 250 metres. Even with good shot placement, eland may travel some distance, making calibre choice and bullet performance critical.
Shot placement - Cape Eland
Although the animal is large, the vital zone is more compact than expected and sits further forward.
On a broadside animal, the correct point of aim is just behind the shoulder and slightly lower than mid-body to reach the heart and lungs.
Best calibre
Cape eland require a capable calibre with excellent penetration. At Side by Side Safaris, .30-06, .300 Win Mag, .308 Win with heavy bullets, 7mm Rem Mag and larger calibres with premium bullets all perform well.
Ethical hunting and selection
At Side by Side Safaris, only mature Cape eland bulls are harvested. Selection is based on horn development, body mass and overall maturity, ensuring both a quality trophy and responsible management.
